Southview Elementary

Summary:

Southview Elementary is a public elementary school located in Apple Valley, Minnesota, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 625 students. The school is part of the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district, which is ranked 100 out of 463 districts in Minnesota and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Southview Elementary has a relatively diverse student population, with 48.32% White, 23.2% African American, 13.76% Hispanic, 4.96% Asian, and 9.28% two or more races. This diversity is higher than nearby schools like Greenleaf Elementary (49.55% White) and Westview Elementary (53.63% White). Academically, Southview's performance is generally on par with or slightly below the district and state averages, but the school ranks highly for African American (92nd out of 310 schools) and Hispanic (69th out of 249 schools) students, indicating these subgroups are performing well compared to their peers statewide.

However, Southview Elementary's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 337th out of 869 Minnesota elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 406th out of 881 in 2023-2024. Additionally, the school has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 23.94% in 2020-2021 to 42.4% in 2022-2023, suggesting a growing population of students from lower-income households. While Southview's performance for certain student subgroups is commendable, the school's overall academic standing and the increasing need for support for economically disadvantaged students are areas that may require attention.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I hand picked Southview out of the local elementary schools. The teachers and staff were standouts, the parental involvement is amazing and it is a very welcoming place. From the moment we stepped in the doors to look at it, it felt like home. It is not our assigned elementary school...I open enrolled and drive my children there every day. That is how much I value Southview. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
