Columbia Heights Senior High

Summary:

Columbia Heights Senior High is a public high school serving 1,092 students in grades 9-12 in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, which is part of the Columbia Heights Public School District. The school has a significantly diverse student population, with over 33% African American and 45% Hispanic students, but consistently underperforms on standardized tests compared to the state and nearby schools like Irondale Senior High and St. Anthony Village Senior High.

Despite its diversity, Columbia Heights Senior High struggles academically, with only 13.93% of students proficient in math and 36.1% proficient in reading, far below the state averages. The school's graduation rate has fluctuated in recent years, ranging from 84.1% to 94.3%, while its dropout rate has been consistently higher than nearby schools, reaching as high as 7.3% in 2019-2020. This may be partly due to the school's high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, which ranges from 61.08% to 80.86%, significantly higher than the 47.48% at Irondale Senior High and 32.62% at St. Anthony Village Senior High.

The challenges faced by Columbia Heights Senior High suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of its diverse, predominantly low-income student population. Comparing the school's performance to nearby schools highlights the disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes within the region, underscoring the importance of ensuring all students have access to high-quality education regardless of their socioeconomic background.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Columbia Heights is a diverse district but the individual attention paid to students is amazing. They offer a large number of programs for students at all academic performance levels including more AP offerings at the high school than any other school in the area. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
