Afsa High School

Summary:

Afsa High School is a public charter high school located in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, serving grades 7-12 with a total enrollment of 175 students. The school has seen a gradual decline in its student racial diversity over the past few years, with the percentage of white students increasing from 69.88% in 2020-2021 to 56% in 2022-2023.

Afsa High School consistently underperforms the state average on standardized tests like the MCA-III in Math, Reading, and Science across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 21.95% of 11th graders were proficient or better in Math, compared to the state average of 34.99%. While the school's four-year graduation rate has improved, reaching 93.1% in 2021-2022, its dropout rate remains higher than the state average at 1.7%. Additionally, Afsa High School has a significantly higher percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 54.29% in 2022-2023, compared to the nearby Roseville Area Senior High (48.09%) and Gentry Academy High (4.76%).

Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.5 in 2022-2023, compared to the higher ratios of 22.9 at Roseville Area Senior High and 18 at Gentry Academy High, the academic outcomes suggest that more comprehensive interventions and support may be needed to address the underlying issues and improve student success at Afsa High School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote AFSA has been a wonderful school choice for our kids who have attended in middle school and high school. AFSA prepares students for the real world, including emphasizing presentation skills, focusing on science fair projects (many AFAS students make it to state science fair competition) and offering lots of support for students in reaching their goals. AFAS offers many interesting and enriching clubs and events such as Robotics, Destination Imagination, theatre, dance, community clean up, volunteering and more. AFSA does a great job preparing students for post high school success including college prep, vocational school prep and career prep like applying for jobs, interviewing, etc. I highly recommend AFSA. Open Quote I heard that the principle and school board made the decision to take students across the state lines without parental approval. How is that possible? I would think that could constitute kidnapping and charges should be brought up. Shame on you Close Quote

Open Quote The director/principal of the school needs a long vacation, like permanently. She decided that she would move the senior camping trip that was planned for Stillwater, to Downsville WI, which she did not disclose to parents or students until they were already on the bus, the reason is till unclear. IWhen I called her on it, her explanation was basically that she could do it because we had previously given permission for the trip. When I argued with her that we had not given permission for her to take them to Wisconsin, she didn't seem to even grasp that it was unacceptable. I spoke with the head of the school board, and he didn't seem to get it either. The only thing that effected them at all was my threat to go to the media. I decided not to do that, due to not wanting to ruin my daughter's last days before graduation. Any criticism on their website is deleted immediately. This was not my first run in with her, as she very often oversteps her bounds where the kids are concerned. There were lots of problems at AFSA this past year, apparently her main concern is the schools reputation. Close Quote

Open Quote My child is a tenth grade student in this school. We are finding the school is fun to attend yet staff struggle to comply with basics that the school touts as a strength. One example would be the grade web site. The school stresses the importance of checking this site with your child and also tells you to check there to see what your child is missing when they are out ill. My child was out ill for two days, so we checked the site and found there were no assignments posted. I then checked in once a week and found most teachers were not posting upcoming assignments. With two weeks left in the trimester, one of my child's teachers entered the majority of assignments and grades for the entire trimester. Close Quote

Open Quote The Director of this school is one of the most unprofessional individuals I have ever dealt with. It is quite concernng to me that this person would be in charge of an institution that is responsible for educating our youth and preparing them for going out into the world and being the best that they can be. Open Quote I had a daughter graduate from AFSA in 2010. I felt at the time that she was well prepared for the University of Minnesota and I was right. she has been on the deans list there. I loved that she could be on the soccer and nordic ski teams even though she was not a star player. I also really appreciated that she had the opportunity and was encouraged to do science fair projects which have led to lots of opportunities in highschool and also post-graduate. I will be sending my 7th grader there this fall. I am thankful for teachers who care. I think my daughter had a better education than my other child who went to the traditional highschool. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
