Minnesota Virtual Schools

Summary:

Minnesota Virtual Schools is a public charter high school located in Roseville, MN, serving grades 6-12 with a total enrollment of 446 students. The school has a diverse student population, with 62.33% White, 11.21% African American, 11.43% Hispanic, 2.47% Asian, and 11.21% two or more races.

Despite its diverse student body, Minnesota Virtual Schools has consistently struggled academically, ranking in the bottom quartile of Minnesota high schools and receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates on the MCA-III assessments are significantly below the state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. Additionally, the school has low graduation rates, with only 26.2% of students graduating within 4 years, and high dropout rates, reaching as high as 16.5% in the 2017-2018 school year. These challenges may be exacerbated by the school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 61.21% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

When compared to nearby charter schools, such as Hmong College Prep Academy High School and HGA Secondary, Minnesota Virtual Schools performs significantly worse academically. These nearby charter schools have higher proficiency rates on the MCA-III assessments and higher graduation rates, despite serving similar student populations. The school's struggles may be indicative of the challenges faced by students in a virtual learning environment, particularly for economically disadvantaged students who may have limited access to technology and support at home.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I go to Minnesota Virtual High School and I absolutely love it and recommend everyone to try it. You even get a school supplied laptop to use. It's so much better than regular school, plus you can go online whenever you want and keep up at your own pace. Online schooling is the way of the future and as more and more people start discovering this school, traditional school will fizzle out. I rate this school 5 stars. It's the best school ever. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
