Riverside Elementary School

Summary:

Riverside Elementary School is a public elementary school in Waterford, Michigan, serving 317 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Waterford School District, which is ranked 378 out of 610 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverside Elementary stands out for its higher percentage of minority students compared to nearby schools, with a student population that is 64.35% White, 14.51% African American, 15.14% Hispanic, and 2.21% Asian. However, the school consistently underperforms the district and state in M-Step test scores, with only 24.5% of 3rd graders proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 38.6% in the district and 39.6% statewide. Riverside also has a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 9.4% in 2018-2019 to 27.0% in 2022-2023, much higher than the surrounding schools.

Despite Riverside Elementary's high spending per student, at $18,683 in 2022-2023, the school's performance has been declining over the years. This suggests the need for intervention and improvement strategies, especially given the school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (75.08%), indicating significant socioeconomic challenges. In comparison, nearby schools like Cooley Elementary and Schoolcraft Elementary demonstrate stronger academic performance and lower chronic absenteeism rates, despite serving similar student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Horrible run down building stuck in the 90s employing adults with control issues and extreme disorganization. I removed my child- 3 teachers throughout his year and his (kindergarten) classroom looked like a jail cell, the office staff do not check ID for pick ups in office, and front office staff also sent my child home with an emergency contact after speaking to me/telling me my child would be going back to class. Stay far away, this school destroyed my son’s love for school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
