Lincoln School

Summary:

Lincoln School is an elementary public magnet school located in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, serving grades PK-7 with a student population of 352. As part of the Sault Ste. Marie Area Schools district, Lincoln School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Native American students (36.08%) compared to the state average, a factor that likely shapes the school's unique cultural and educational needs.

While Lincoln School has seen some years of above-average performance in English Language Arts and Math, it has also struggled in other years, particularly in 2020-2021 when scores dipped significantly below the state and district averages. The school's rankings have fluctuated over the years, ranging from 416 out of 1,548 Michigan elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 769 out of 1,153 in 2020-2021, suggesting challenges in maintaining consistent academic achievement. Additionally, Lincoln School has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 14.6% in 2018-2019 to 23.6% in 2022-2023, an issue that the school should address to support student learning.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Washington Elementary School and Joseph K Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe Academy, Lincoln School stands out for its unique student population and academic performance. While Washington Elementary has a similar racial makeup and higher chronic absenteeism rates, Joseph K Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe Academy has an even higher percentage of Native American students (49.5%) and lower test scores compared to Lincoln School. These comparisons highlight the diverse educational landscape in the Sault Sainte Marie area and the specific challenges faced by Lincoln School in supporting its student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote it is impossible to establish any kind of relationship with the school or the district. i thought a school was supposed to work WITH parents for a childs education... at every turn, when i challenge that the school might improve their services to my family (nothing big... things like asking that my daughter wear her glasses)i am treated like i am a moron. recently i asked that the school evaluate my daughter for speech services. as part of my request, i let them know i noticed her tongue protruded more than it used to. now in her file, it says basically... the mother doesnt know what she is talking about, this childs tongue isnt getting worse... kind of hard to detrmine that when they hadnt ever seen her tongue before, right? About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
