Orchard View High School has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of African American (23.78%) and Hispanic (8.51%) students. However, the school consistently performs below the state average on standardized tests, with only 22.9% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in M-Step/Science and 9% proficient or better in SAT/Mathematics in 2023-2024. Orchard View High School also has a lower four-year graduation rate (86.0% in 2022-2023) and a higher dropout rate (6.2% in 2022-2023) compared to the state average. Additionally, the school has a significantly higher chronic absenteeism rate (39.4% in 2022-2023) compared to the state average and nearby schools like North Muskegon High School (15.4%) and Oakridge High School (31.2%).

Despite the high percentage of students from low-income families (73.61% in 2022-2023), Orchard View High School's per-student spending ($14,805 in 2022-2023) is higher than the state average, suggesting that funding and resources may not be the primary driver of the school's underperformance. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and special education students, who rank significantly lower than their peers in the state. The underlying factors behind Orchard View High School's challenges require further investigation to develop targeted interventions and support.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a lifelong student of OVHS I can vouch for everything on this list. The only thing good about Orchard View are its lunches. Extremely understaffed and mismanaged, it's ranked low for a reason. It's even worse when I look at my sister and see that she's on track to the same fate as me. I would heavily recommend trying to get into another school district. WMC tuition is a bit much but it's worth it for the better education. If you can spring a bit more for a house in a better district that would be my main recommendation. You might spend a bit more on a house but you'll save yourself the trouble of ending up with a child like me who everyone says is gifted but fails his classes. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE PLEASE, online schools are a better alternative for christs sake. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
