Mt Pleasant Middle School

Summary:

Mt Pleasant Middle School is a public middle school serving 702 students in grades 6-8 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, which is part of the Mt. Pleasant City School District.

While Mt Pleasant Middle School's academic performance is generally on par with or slightly above state and district averages, the school faces some notable challenges. It has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism rates, rising from 11.2% in 2020-2021 to 30.2% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the state average and the rates of nearby schools like Chippewa Hills Middle School (33.2%) and Farwell Middle School (28.1%). Additionally, the school's performance for certain student subgroups, such as Native American students and students with special needs, is in the bottom 20% of Michigan middle schools, and its performance for low socioeconomic status students is in the bottom 30% of the state.

Compared to nearby middle schools, Mt Pleasant Middle School generally performs on par or slightly better in terms of academic achievement. However, the school's high chronic absenteeism rate and lower performance for certain subgroups suggest areas for improvement. Examining the practices and strategies of higher-performing nearby schools, such as Shepherd Middle School, could provide valuable insights for Mt Pleasant Middle School as it works to address these challenges and better serve its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Don't send your kids here, the school does nothing about the violence among students, they could care less that the kids vape in class when a teacher steps out or that kids are doing it in the teachers bathrooms. Several times the administration has been made aware of these issues and nothing gets done. Not to mention they allow a history teacher to send children emails about sexual preference when he isn't qualified to do so. The teachers like to post about certain children and their parents on social media. Also last I knew politics didn't belong in a classroom unless it was a debate class, which isn't offered at the school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
