Michigan Center JrSr High School

Summary:

Michigan Center JrSr High School is a public high school serving around 580 students in grades 7-12 in the Michigan Center School District, a predominantly White community. However, the school faces several challenges, including low statewide rankings, below-average academic performance, high chronic absenteeism, and increasing dropout rates.

Compared to nearby schools like Jackson Preparatory Early College and East Jackson Secondary School, Michigan Center JrSr High School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Michigan high schools and has a low 1 or 2 out of 5 star rating from School Digger. Its four-year graduation rate of 83.5% is lower than the state average, and its dropout rate has reached as high as 5% in recent years, exceeding the typical state average of 2-3%. Additionally, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, reaching 40.4% in the 2021-2022 school year, much higher than the state average of 15-20%.

Academically, Michigan Center JrSr High School students perform below the state average on state assessments, with proficiency rates often 10-20 percentage points lower than the state averages in subjects like English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. These academic challenges may be linked to the school's relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with around 47% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. However, the school's strong performance with its special education population suggests that it may be providing effective support and resources for this subgroup, which could be a foundation for improvement in other areas. Addressing racial achievement gaps and the overall factors contributing to the school's struggles will be crucial for Michigan Center JrSr High School to improve its outcomes and better serve its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Michigan Center is the best district around I would not even consider having my kids attend another school now that they have gone to Center. The staff is great and they all work as a family, they treat every child like it is there own and they get to know the kids and their families. My kids love it at Center as well. The students are great, and I feel the teachers really try their best to connect to the students to make them feel safe while at school, if you walk into the school you see all the administrators walking around being friendly with the kids, kids will stop and talk to the teachers and administrators. The superintendent even knows 80% of the students in the junior high and high school by name. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
