Pattengill School

Summary:

Pattengill School is an elementary school in Lansing, Michigan, serving around 600 students in grades PK-8. As part of the Lansing Public School District, which is ranked 553 out of 610 districts in the state, Pattengill faces significant challenges in academic performance, student engagement, and socioeconomic factors.

Pattengill School consistently performs well below state and district averages in standardized test scores, with only 16.2% of 3rd graders proficient in English Language Arts compared to 39.6% statewide and 18% in the Lansing district. The school also struggles with extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.6% to 90.7% in recent years, and has a very high percentage (88.5%) of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. These factors contribute to Pattengill's ranking in the bottom quartile of Michigan elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Pattengill's overall performance is low, there are notable differences in the academic achievement of different racial subgroups, with African American and Hispanic students performing better than the school average. However, Pattengill's performance still lags significantly behind nearby schools in the East Lansing School District, such as Whitehills Elementary and Glencairn School, which consistently perform above state and district averages. Addressing Pattengill's challenges will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that considers the unique needs of its diverse student population and the underlying factors contributing to its struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school does not provide an adequate education for young children. The administration allows rampant proliferation of racism and is unable to deal with the violence brought to the classroom by students. Classes are disorganized and unreasonable students aren't learning, they are filling out worksheets with mindless answers and appeased with constant movies and television. Technology services at this school are horrid. Its almost as if they do not even have an IT department. There is no actual biotech included in their curriculum this is just an elementary with a fancy name but incredibly low student performance and test scores. This school objectively ranks among the worst in Michigan among student satisfaction, personal and professional growth, and engagement with material and I urge you not to enroll your pupils in this program. It is a waste of your time, effort, sanity and money. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
