Riverside Elementary School

Summary:

Riverside Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-4 in the Lakeview School District in Battle Creek, Michigan, with a diverse student population of over 500 students.

Riverside Elementary School consistently outperforms the Lakeview School District and the state of Michigan in academic proficiency, with 50% of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 38.9% for the district and 39.6% for the state, and 59.7% of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in math, compared to 51.1% for the district and 43.4% for the state. The school also ranks among the top in Michigan for its English Language Learner (ELL) student performance and has performed well for its low-socioeconomic status (SES) student population. When compared to other nearby elementary schools, such as Prairieview School and schools in the Battle Creek Public Schools district, Riverside Elementary School stands out as a high-performing school.

However, Riverside Elementary School has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 13.5% in the 2018-2019 school year to 27.8% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is a concerning trend that may be impacting the school's academic performance and should be addressed. Despite this, the school's strong academic performance, particularly for its ELL and low-SES student populations, is a testament to the quality of education it provides to its diverse student body.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Highly qualified and motivated staff. Very caring people. This school has terrific teachers and a dedicated, hardworking and thoughtful principal. Great anti-bullying program. Staff in constantly working on Professional Development to increase and improve their own teaching skills.

Particulary great: Karen Stults (pre school) Kathy Sellers (first grade) Donna Keenan (Kindergarten) Barbara Martin 2nd grade...All staff members perform well and care a lot about kids. Kevin Canfield has the patience of a saint and works really well with little guys who are sometimes behaving a bit poorly who need a strong yet patient male in their lives.

My kids both went through this school...each had different teachers. Both my kids were well-educated at Riverside and were treated with caring and respect...as was I as a parent.

Terrific music program...music treacher is skilled in music and has great classroom management skills.

For Kindergarten Kids the art classes are not top notch. Lots of coloring. Lots of watching movies about art. Wish there were more "let's wear our paint shirts and make some mess while learning art...but that rarely happens. Sometimes Art class is just building things with colorful cubes and then putting the cubes away. The art gets better in first grade and thereafter. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
