Townline Elementary

Summary:

Townline Elementary is a public elementary school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, serving 307 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Kentwood Public Schools district, which is ranked 318 out of 610 districts in the state.

Townline Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 21.5% White, 22.15% African American, 26.71% Hispanic, 13.68% Asian, and 15.31% two or more races. However, the school has faced significant challenges, including a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, from 17.9% in 2018-2019 to 44.3% in 2022-2023. Academically, Townline's proficiency rates on the M-Step assessment are lower than the Kentwood district and state averages, with just 19.5% of 3rd-graders proficient in English Language Arts in 2023-2024, compared to 46% for the district and 39.6% for the state. The school also serves a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 85.02% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite these challenges, Townline Elementary has some notable strengths. The school's Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) students perform relatively better than the overall student population, with Hispanic students ranking 81 out of 201 Michigan elementary schools in 3rd-grade English Language Arts, and ELL students ranking 73 out of 184. Additionally, Townline's special education students performed exceptionally well, ranking 17 out of 195 Michigan elementary schools in 2022-2023. While Townline's academic performance lags behind nearby Kentwood schools, its diversity and the strong performance of certain subgroups are promising signs that with targeted interventions and increased funding, the school can improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Horrible! They lost my kid! Me and his dad were waiting to pick up our son.. and he did not come out with his class.. I asked his teacher where he was at and she said he came out.. I knew he didn’t because I watched them all come out. So we panicked and ran into the school to look for him.. And when we found him. he was put on a bus. when I specifically signed papers saying he cannot ride the bus, he’s pick up only! He somehow got a bus tag put on his backpack and nobody knew how it got there, they said they must have confused it.. how tho? his name is on his backpack.. a lady in the office said “he didn’t want to follow the teacher” WOW!!!! What?!? So you let a 5 year old do whatever he wants? Like get on a bus?! That’s just my main reason I took my son out of that school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
