R Grant Graham Elementary School

Summary:

R Grant Graham Elementary School is a public elementary school serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade in Auburn Hills, Michigan, which is part of the Avondale School District. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that has shifted in recent years, and faces several challenges, including low academic performance, high chronic absenteeism, and a high proportion of students from low-income families.

Academically, R Grant Graham Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Michigan elementary schools, with proficiency rates on state assessments that are significantly lower than the district and state averages. The school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students performing better than the overall school, while students with special needs and those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds have struggled. In comparison, nearby schools like Way Elementary School and Hamilton Elementary School in the Bloomfield Hills and Troy school districts have significantly higher academic performance and lower rates of chronic absenteeism.

The school's high rate of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 12.3% to 44.5% in recent years, is notably higher than the state average and indicates a potential challenge in student engagement and attendance. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 52.89% to 60.9%, suggesting a higher proportion of students from low-income families, which can be a factor in academic performance and other educational outcomes. Addressing these issues will be crucial for improving the educational experience and outcomes for the students at R Grant Graham Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote So far our experience with Graham has been very positive. Our son is in kindergarten and loves going to school everyday. All of the staff from the teachers to the office staff are all very caring and hard-working. Previous posts criticizing the principal's leadership couldn't be more wrong. We have found Mr Harris to be very engaged and approachable. He seems to have an excellent handle on discipline in the building (I wonder if negative reviews were due to behavior problems that he wouldn't tolerate). Diversity in the school is an asset. Lastly our son is visually impaired and the district has been exceptional with helping to accommodate his special needs. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
