Vandenboom Alternative High School

Summary:

Vandenboom Alternative High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Marquette, Michigan, with a student population of 149. The school is part of the Marquette Area Public Schools district, which is ranked 102 out of 610 districts in the state.

Vandenboom Alternative High School faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools like Marquette Senior High School. The school consistently ranks in the bottom half of Michigan high schools, with low academic performance, high dropout rates, and extremely high rates of chronic absenteeism. For example, in 2023-2024, only 40.5% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in SAT/Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, compared to 70.1% for the Marquette Area Public Schools district and 51.3% for the state of Michigan. The school's four-year graduation rate has also been low, ranging from 34.3% to 65.5% over the past 5 years, significantly lower than the 98.4% graduation rate at Marquette Senior High School.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 55.47% to 65.77% over the past 3 years, suggests that Vandenboom Alternative High School may be struggling to support its more disadvantaged student population. The relatively high per-student spending at the school ($13,424 in 2022-2023) compared to Marquette Senior High School ($13,536) raises questions about the effective allocation of resources and the need for a more targeted approach to address the school's challenges. Addressing these issues will likely require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that focuses on targeted interventions, resource allocation, and collaboration with the broader community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This has got to be one of the best schools in our area; the teachers are wonderful and caring, and the students benefit from these teachers' outstanding performance. The curriculum which is offered there is on a level consistent with future success in college and/or other technical training.

I've had two of my children graduate from there, and three more will be. I have such a high regard for this school, that my husband, myself, and one other college student are volunteer "teachers" there now, teaching the local Native American language.

Again, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
