Summary:

William Wirt Middle is a public middle school located in Riverdale, Maryland, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,246 students. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

William Wirt Middle faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance compared to state and district averages. The school's proficiency rates in Mathematics (7.7%) and English Language Arts (29.8%) for the 2023-2024 school year are significantly lower than the state (19.8% and 48.4%) and Prince George's County Public Schools (7.7% and 36.1%) averages. Additionally, the school's student subgroups, such as Hispanic students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, perform particularly poorly compared to their peers in the state. In the 2020-2021 school year, Hispanic students at William Wirt Middle ranked 198 out of 207 Maryland middle schools, and low socioeconomic status students ranked 240 out of 273 Maryland middle schools.

While William Wirt Middle is part of the same school district as nearby schools, its academic performance is significantly lower. For example, Kenmoor Middle, a public magnet school located just 3.68 miles away, consistently outperforms William Wirt Middle on MCAP tests, with proficiency rates that are often double or triple those of William Wirt Middle. The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at William Wirt Middle, ranging from 75.3% to 94.14% over the past few years, suggests that socioeconomic factors may be playing a significant role in the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter goes to William Wirt Middle School, in last couple of weeks I have not seen any difference in her, She tries a lot to learn English, today I asked her what do you think about your school. She smiled sadly and said, I don't want to complain but there is nothing I can say I have learnt, our English teacher fills blank places in paper and then asks us to fill them in our papers as she has done. I am very sad today!! Close Quote

Open Quote I find the administration there to be a complete and utter joke. The "principal" or whoever they have sitting behind a desk in that school is a complete waste of a salary. He is a bully, a liar and someone who would rather belittle others then fix a problem. He is truly a pass the buck kind of person and its something that is more than glowing when you spend 5 minutes in a room with him. If you have the option of sending your child to another school do so and keep them as far away as you can from this snake oil salesman. If I was his supervisor I would certainly remove him from that position before he opens them up to liability for his actions towards his staff and students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
