Valley View Elementary

Summary:

Valley View Elementary is a public magnet elementary school located in Oxon Hill, Maryland, serving around 350 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district.

Valley View Elementary stands out as a high-performing school, consistently outperforming the district and state in both Mathematics and English Language Arts proficiency. The school has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic students and a lower percentage of African American students. Despite having over 70% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, Valley View Elementary maintains a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger, ranking in the top half of Maryland elementary schools. This is a significantly higher rating than the nearby schools, which are mostly in the bottom quarter of the state.

Valley View Elementary's academic success is particularly notable in its support of African American and Hispanic students, who perform significantly better than their peers in the district and state. The school's relatively high per-student spending of around $16,500 and low student-teacher ratio of 13:1 may contribute to its effectiveness in supporting economically disadvantaged students. While the nearby schools in the Prince George's County district generally struggle academically, Valley View Elementary stands out as a relative bright spot, providing valuable insights that could be shared with other schools in the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Troubled young child from DC transferred to this school. The transition has been very hard. The child's teacher recently asked the child's class TO WRITE DOWN ALL OF THE THINGS THE CHILD HAD DONE TO THEM. What sort of sad, unqualified, uneducated, unprofessional, no account moron stands up in front of a classroom of children and does this? Apparently, a teacher from Valley View, does. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
