Whetstone Elementary

Summary:

Whetstone Elementary is a public elementary school in Gaithersburg, Maryland, serving 715 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which is ranked 7th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 4-star rating.

Whetstone Elementary stands out for its high percentage of Hispanic students (54.83%) and students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (74.97%), which is significantly higher than nearby schools like Goshen Elementary and Strawberry Knoll Elementary. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 12:1 and the highest per-student spending among nearby schools, Whetstone consistently underperforms in both mathematics and English language arts proficiency compared to the district and state averages.

The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, with Whetstone ranking in the bottom 20% of Maryland elementary schools for English Language Learners and students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. This low academic performance has resulted in Whetstone Elementary being consistently ranked in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with a 1- or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past several years. Addressing these challenges will require a comprehensive approach, including targeted interventions and additional resources, to improve educational outcomes for all students at Whetstone Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote When a child (A KINDERGARTNER) gets kicked in the face and loses two front teeth and they can't get their story together. THERE IS A PROBLEM. Where is the supervision??? Whether it was an accident or not. Apparently they were ruff housing around??(when is ruff housing permitted at school?) Then they say the aid that was suppose to be there when the incident occurred is gone for the day. If they had adequate adult supervision,LIKE ALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS USUALLY HAVE, then it might not have occurred. So now my son is going to be facing issues with his self esteem and who knows what else because this school can't control their students behavior during "lunch/recess.". My son also has speech problems and now no front teeth to practice saying hard syllables. In which the vice principle responded "I didn't talk until I was 7." No offense but do I really care what you did as a child. My son isn't you. I can't wait to move and take my son out of this school.NO SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED AT THIS SCHOOL APPARENTLY, and I truly feel like they blew off taking responsibility for THEIR negligence. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
