Strathmore Elementary

Summary:

Strathmore Elementary is a public elementary school in Silver Spring, Maryland, serving 487 students in grades 3-5. The school is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which is ranked 7th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 4-star rating.

While Strathmore Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (54.41%) compared to nearby schools, it consistently underperforms the district and state in both Mathematics and English Language Arts proficiency across all grade levels. The school's African American students rank in the top 25% of Maryland elementary schools, but its White and English Language Learner students rank in the bottom 25%. Strathmore Elementary also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 64.36% to 74.33% over the past three school years, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

Interestingly, while Strathmore Elementary shares the same school district as the nearby Flower Valley Elementary, which is just 2 miles away, Flower Valley outperforms Strathmore Elementary in both Mathematics and English Language Arts proficiency across all grade levels. This suggests that Strathmore Elementary may need to implement targeted interventions and focus on equity and opportunity for all students to address the racial disparities in performance and improve its overall academic achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As of this year I am very disappointed in Strathmore performance as a school in staff. I am so glad that this is my sons last year. They have did nothing to help are support my child. My concerns was ignored as a parent. It"s sad when a teacher has a personal issue with a student. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
