Rolling Terrace Elementary

Summary:

Rolling Terrace Elementary is a public magnet elementary school located in Takoma Park, Maryland, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 709 students. The school is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which is ranked 7th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Rolling Terrace Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (78.56%) compared to nearby schools like Highland View Elementary (60.72%) and Sligo Creek Elementary (10.48%), the school consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Maryland elementary schools. Its performance on MCAP assessments is significantly lower than the Montgomery County and Maryland state averages across all grades and subjects. Additionally, Rolling Terrace has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 79.64% to 88.15% over the past 3 years, which is much higher than the nearby schools.

Despite these challenges, Rolling Terrace Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending levels compared to nearby schools. Interestingly, while the school's African American students perform relatively well, its Hispanic students, who make up the majority of the population, rank 325th out of 347 Maryland elementary schools for this subgroup. The school's unique demographics and socioeconomic factors suggest that targeted interventions and support systems may be needed to address the specific needs of the student population and improve academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote With its highly trained, effective and caring staff, and efficient administrators, my children are getting an incredible education at Rolling Terrace. I never cease to be impressed with the academic, extra-curricular activities, and special events. My kids actually get excited about making the "GeoBowl" team, and every interaction I've had with staff has been deeply affirming. I think about the middle-class elementary school I went to and laugh. My kids are getting an elementary education that puts mine to shame. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
