Glen Haven Elementary

Summary:

Glen Haven Elementary is a public elementary school in Silver Spring, Maryland, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district. The school has a diverse student population, with a majority of Hispanic students and significant African American and White student populations.

While Glen Haven Elementary is part of a highly-ranked school district, the school itself has struggled academically in recent years. Its students consistently perform below the district and state averages on standardized tests, with only 19.5% to 25.3% of students proficient or better in math and 21.5% to 28.6% proficient or better in English language arts. The school's statewide ranking has also declined, from 242 out of 847 Maryland elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 618 out of 859 in 2023-2024. Notably, the school's performance varies significantly among different student subgroups, with African American students outperforming their Hispanic and low-income peers.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, Glen Haven Elementary generally lags behind. For example, Forest Knolls Elementary, located less than a mile away, consistently outperforms Glen Haven across all grades and subjects. Other nearby schools, such as Glenallan Elementary and Pine Crest Elementary, also demonstrate stronger academic performance. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio and increased per-student spending, Glen Haven Elementary's academic outcomes have not improved, suggesting the need for targeted interventions to address the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was worried originally about this school because of the ratings when we first moved to the area but I absolutely love the school!! There is a great community atmosphere. All the teachers are motivated and really want the children to succeed. The new principal is awesome! She is there to greet the kids every morning as they come through the door. The school has an open door policy so I never feel the disconnect I have felt with my son's schools in the past. My son is thriving there and loves it! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
