Fields Road Elementary

Summary:

Fields Road Elementary is a public elementary school in Gaithersburg, Maryland, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district.

While Fields Road Elementary has a diverse student population and a relatively high per-student spending level, its academic performance is mixed. The school's overall proficiency rates in state assessments are lower than the district and state averages, but it performs better than some nearby schools like Brown Station Elementary and Summit Hall Elementary. However, the school lags behind higher-performing nearby schools such as Rachel Carson Elementary, DuFief Elementary, and Stone Mill Elementary.

Fields Road Elementary's performance varies across different student subgroups, with lower rankings for African American, English Language Learner, and Low Socioeconomic Status students compared to other Maryland elementary schools. The school performs better for Hispanic and White students, and female students outperform their male counterparts. These factors, along with the school's relatively high percentage of students from low-income families, may contribute to its overall academic performance, which places it in the middle range among Maryland elementary schools with a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son has an AWESOME 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Beth Molnar! After coming from another MCPS school that didn't provide a good curriculum or one on one attention, my son is so happy now! I see the difference in his attitude, his work, his enthusiasm to go to school everyday. He loves his school and his teachers. Fields Road teaches the kids more than just "book" education. They teach them how to be good citizens, good people and honorable people. Close Quote

Open Quote Amazing teacher, supportive administration and active PTA. This diverse school offers students the opportunity to not only learn academically, but also from each other. My children have both had a positive experience and there is the right balance of projects and homework. Close Quote

Open Quote Fields Road is the quintessential neighborhood elementary school with excellent teachers that care about each and every kid. We have loved our 5 years here! Class sizes are smaller than most schools and the school teachers the curriculum, of course, be also teaches good citizenship. Visit the school to be super impressed with what you see. Great new principal last year, too! Close Quote

Open Quote Fields Road is a hidden gem. Class sizes are small for the MCPS system in the lower grades, 16:1 - 20:1, the teachers really care and are amazing with the kids, and the administration is great and engaged. The teachers and staff listen to the parents and genuinely have the interest of our children at heart. Close Quote

Open Quote My child's classroom experience has been great, and we adore the staff. Yes, my child got bullied and pinched by a classmate in Kindergarten, but learning how to deal with difficult people is an important life skill to have. I rate my experience at FRES 2 stars because there are NO quality control practices in place in the media center for the library books. Be forewarned that the media center staff do not take tattered books out of circulation (by design perhaps to increase library funds?). They will allow your child to borrow a book that looks like it went through a tree shredder. If your child was the last one to touch a book that was already in horrible condition and the pages fall off the binding when she returns it, then she will be suspended from borrowing more books, a letter will be sent home, your child will have a miserable rest of the day, and you will have to pay for the original value of the book. Don't get me wrong; if my child were one to destroy and desecrate library books, then I welcome the fines. It's only fair. However, my kids respect books and are avid readers. Yet we were fined and my child humiliated because media center staff have dismissed any responsibility to check the condition of the books upon return, when re-shelved, and at time of checkout. As added bonuses, the fine came out of our school fundraising budget, so FRES missed out on some funds from us that year, and my child skipped some fundraising social events. My lesson from all of this is to look over the condition of the books the day my child brings them home and immediately return them to the media center if the condition is questionable/ not acceptable. My wish is for the media center to establish improved fundraising strategies and have a better quality control system in place for books. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
