Swansfield Elementary

Summary:

Swansfield Elementary is a public elementary school in Columbia, Maryland, serving 592 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Howard County Public Schools district, which is ranked 2nd out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Swansfield Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with 42.06% African American, 9.8% Hispanic, and 8.78% Asian students, which is higher than most nearby schools. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages, with proficiency rates in Mathematics (39%) and English Language Arts (48.1%) below the district (41.1% and 63%, respectively) and state (24.1% and 48.4%, respectively) averages. Additionally, Swansfield has a higher percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 41.05% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the nearby schools.

Compared to the top-performing nearby schools, such as Pointers Run Elementary and Clarksville Elementary, Swansfield Elementary generally performs below the state's top 5% of elementary schools. However, the school's student-teacher ratio is relatively low, ranging from 10.8 to 12.4 students per teacher, which is lower than the nearby schools. The school's declining statewide ranking and subgroup performance disparities suggest areas for improvement, which the school and district may want to address through targeted interventions and resource allocation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is a great school. I love the racial diversity that exist within this school. My daughter has friends from all ethnic backgrounds which I feel will benefit her in the future.

There are great programs for students, lego clubs, chess clubs, etc... that the students can partake in.

My child has grown and learned numerous things throughout the school year. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
