Jeffers Hill Elementary

Summary:

Jeffers Hill Elementary is a public elementary school in Columbia, Maryland, serving 408 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Howard County Public Schools district, which is ranked 2nd out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Jeffers Hill Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American and Hispanic students compared to nearby schools, which tend to have more White and Asian students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages, with proficiency rates in Mathematics (32.6%) and English Language Arts (52.4%) below the district (41.1% and 63%, respectively) and state (24.1% and 48.4%, respectively) averages. This may be due in part to the school's higher percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 45.83% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the nearby schools.

Despite these challenges, Jeffers Hill Elementary has consistently ranked in the middle range of Maryland elementary schools, with a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance is relatively better for African American students and low socioeconomic status students compared to the overall school ranking, and it has a higher per-student spending of $17,520, suggesting that the school is allocating more resources to support its diverse student population. Nearby schools like Atholton Elementary and Waterloo Elementary have significantly higher academic performance, while schools with higher percentages of low-income students, such as Stevens Forest Elementary and Talbott Springs Elementary, tend to have lower academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote It's not about the student all about the staff they talk really nasty to parents so I know the kids are not lying when they say some teachers and vice principal talk smart and bully them . Close Quote

Open Quote Be aware that usually, when people post ratings, they are disgruntled. Jeffers Hill Elementary deserves much more recognition for their efforts, programs, and classroom work with the students. My KINDERGARTEN son is doing 1st grade math, and reads at a 2nd...probably 3rd grade level (he can read anything you can read) and the teachers continue to challenge him rather than slow him down. That says a lot about their dedication to the student's individual growth and development. We couldn't have landed at a better place and I absolutely recommend this school to anyone who is looking. Open Quote Jeffers Hill is a great school. The teachers are quick to respond to questions, the admin staff is open about the school procedures, and there is a large active PTA. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
