Magnolia Middle

Summary:

Magnolia Middle is a public middle school located in Joppa, Maryland, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 730. The school is part of the Harford County Public Schools district, which is ranked 9th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Magnolia Middle faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, with consistently low proficiency rates and statewide rankings compared to both the district and state averages. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (around 50%) compared to the nearby schools, which tend to have a majority white student population. Additionally, Magnolia Middle has a very high percentage of students (around 70-80%) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, the school's performance on MCAP assessments shows significant gaps between racial subgroups, with Hispanic students outperforming White students.

The nearby schools, such as Southampton Middle, Fallston Middle School, and Bel Air Middle, consistently outperform Magnolia Middle on academic measures, with higher proficiency rates and better statewide rankings. This suggests that Magnolia Middle may face unique challenges that are not present in the surrounding schools, and further investigation into the school's resources, teaching practices, and support systems could provide valuable insights to help address these disparities.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There is no secret here. Overall this school is horrible. It deserves it's reputation. There are some great teachers, but they either burn out quickly or decide to roll out because of inept administration and unruly students. There is little hope for this place and a parent's only blessing is that it's only for 3 years. If there was a 0 star option, I would choose it.

Administration- on its best day is nothing more then average.
Teachers- Its a shame to see new energetic teachers struggle to teach lessons because the school cant handle or will not discipline students.
Overall opinion "Hopeless" Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
