Westminster High

Summary:

Westminster High is a public high school serving 1,517 students in grades 9-12 in Westminster, Maryland, which is part of the highly-ranked Carroll County Public Schools district.

Academically, Westminster High is a strong performer, consistently ranking in the top 50 high schools in Maryland. The school excels in English Language Arts, with 73% of 10th-grade students proficient or better on the MCAP assessment, compared to 55.3% statewide. However, the school's mathematics performance lags behind, with only 19.7% of students proficient or better in MCAP/Mathematics, lower than the district and state averages. Compared to nearby schools like Liberty High and Century High, Westminster High generally performs better than some schools but falls behind the higher-performing ones.

One area of concern for Westminster High is its declining racial diversity, with the percentage of White students increasing from 81.98% in 2020-2021 to 77.32% in 2022-2023, in contrast to some nearby schools like Winters Mill High that have a more diverse student population. Additionally, the school's lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (23.53%) compared to schools like Francis Scott Key High (41.31%) and Gateway School (62.67%) may contribute to its academic success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote the student body is a very diverse "society", but by being in a more rural area some students are "trapped" in the local area and only experience one culture which is their own. That leads to misunderstanding of other students. this makes up for about 35 percent of the schools population. Every year WHS hosts a culture fest which leads to stereotypical questions being asked that the 35 percentile sees on TV or hears from other students. This leads to hazing. i would strongly suggest a widened district for the school to include a wider variety of students Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
