The school also excels in Algebra I, with 57.3% of students proficient or better, significantly higher than the district (26.7%) and state (20%) averages. While Northern Middle has a relatively diverse student population, with 74.84% White, 9.91% African American, 5.5% Hispanic, and 1.42% Asian students, the school's performance for African American students ranks 23rd out of 259 Maryland middle schools, but only 79th out of 210 for White students.

Northern Middle's low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 12.89% in the 2022-2023 school year, suggests that the school serves a relatively affluent community. This may contribute to the school's high academic performance, as research has shown that socioeconomic status can be a significant factor in student achievement. However, the school still ranks 51st out of 273 Maryland middle schools for students of low socioeconomic status, indicating that it is able to support these students effectively. Compared to nearby schools like Calvert Middle (32.67% free/reduced-price lunch) and Plum Point Middle (16.05% free/reduced-price lunch), Northern Middle's student population is more affluent.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote School is falling down and terrible. I was bullied and the administration didn’t care or do anything. They just look the other way and let the bullies do whatever they want. I was supposed to go to a quiet room for testing but I got put in the special ed classroom which was right next to the wood shop room and people kept talking to me when I was trying to do a test. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
