Eastern Technical High School

Summary:

Eastern Technical High School is a public magnet high school serving grades 9-12 in Baltimore County, Maryland, with a student population of 1,262. The school has consistently ranked among the top high schools in Maryland, with a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger, and is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district.

Eastern Technical High School significantly outperforms the Baltimore County and Maryland state averages in academic proficiency, with 98.8% of 10th-grade students proficient or better in MCAP English Language Arts, compared to 47.5% in Baltimore County and 55.3% statewide. The school's student population is also more racially diverse than nearby schools, with 44.29% White, 19.97% African American, and 26.86% Asian students. Additionally, Eastern Technical High School has a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 24.72%, compared to nearby schools ranging from 45.44% to 64.94%.

Despite its diverse student population, Eastern Technical High School is able to achieve exceptional academic results, challenging the notion that diversity and high performance are mutually exclusive. The school's success stands in stark contrast to some of the nearby schools, such as Dundalk High and Chesapeake High, which have significantly lower proficiency rates and higher percentages of students receiving free/reduced lunch. The factors contributing to Eastern Technical High School's exceptional performance, such as its magnet program, teaching quality, and resource allocation, warrant further investigation to provide valuable insights for other schools in the region.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
