Merrymount

Summary:

Merrymount is an elementary school located in Quincy, Massachusetts, serving 327 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school consistently outperforms the Quincy district and the state of Massachusetts in academic proficiency, with 52.32% of students proficient or better in MCAS Next Generation/English Language Arts, compared to 43.44% for Quincy and 39.17% for Massachusetts.

Merrymount's performance is particularly strong for certain student subgroups, such as Low Socio Economic Status students, who ranked 157 out of 760 Massachusetts elementary schools in the 2023-2024 school year. While the school's academic excellence is evident, its statewide ranking has declined from 147 out of 914 Massachusetts elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 320 out of 916 in 2023-2024, suggesting that other schools in the state may be improving at a faster rate. Compared to nearby schools, Merrymount outperforms the Snug Harbor Community School and Wollaston School on most academic measures, particularly in English Language Arts and Science, though Wollaston School has stronger performance in Mathematics.

Overall, Merrymount is a high-performing elementary school that consistently outperforms the Quincy district and the state of Massachusetts in academic proficiency. The school's diverse student population, strong performance for certain subgroups, and overall academic excellence make it a standout in the Quincy school system, though its declining statewide ranking suggests the need for continued innovation and improvement to maintain its position as a top-performing elementary school in Massachusetts.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Where to start? The principal shouts rude things at parents and students and she often lies about phantom school rules. PTO members have quit over this person.

Bullying is rampant and little but lip service is given to any complaints. For the kids who are bullied they will often be blamed for bringing it upon themselves. Special needs kids are especially targeted.

Many school staff follow the lead of the principal and are also rude and petty.

Everything about this school is geared towards the standardized testing. The month of June might as well be cancelled for how little they actually teach the kids. I think we had five field trips in the last two weeks alone.

The physical building is too small, very old (1927) with a cramped gym/cafeteria/auditorium/after school space. Recess is in the back parking lot but not on the adjacent ball field.

There are a handful of very dedicated people in this building but their efforts are undermined by tired "leadership." Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
