Gilmore Elementary School

Summary:

Gilmore Elementary School is a public elementary school in Brockton, Massachusetts, serving 403 students in grades PK-5. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Massachusetts elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Gilmore Elementary significantly underperforms compared to state and district averages on MCAS Next Generation assessments. In 2023-2024, only 16.57% of Gilmore students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 39.17% statewide and 20.81% in Brockton. In math, the proficiency rate was just 13.71%, compared to 40.91% statewide and 19.51% in Brockton. Science proficiency was also low at 10.91%, compared to 41.95% statewide and 18.67% in Brockton. Gilmore's subgroup performance is particularly concerning, with African American and Hispanic students ranking in the bottom 25-30% of their respective subgroups statewide.

While other Brockton elementary schools, such as Louis F. Angelo and John F. Kennedy, also struggle academically, they perform significantly better than Gilmore on MCAS assessments. Gilmore's higher per-student spending and relatively high student-teacher ratio have not been enough to drive meaningful improvements, suggesting that a more comprehensive, targeted approach may be needed to address the root causes of the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
