Barnstable High

Summary:

Barnstable High is a public high school located in Hyannis, Massachusetts, serving grades 8-12 with a total enrollment of 1,763 students. While the school has seen a gradual decline in its student racial diversity over the past few years, it faces several challenges, including below-average academic performance, declining graduation rates, and a decreasing statewide ranking.

Barnstable High's academic performance, as measured by MCAS Next Generation test scores, is generally below the state average across all grade levels and subject areas. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science were 25.54%, 17.79%, and 28% respectively in 2023-2024, compared to the state averages of 39.17%, 40.91%, and 41.95%. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, who rank in the bottom quartile of Massachusetts high schools in these categories. However, the school's English Language Learner (ELL) students perform relatively better, ranking in the top half of Massachusetts high schools for this subgroup. Barnstable High's four-year graduation rate has declined from 90.3% in 2018-2019 to 85.6% in 2022-2023, which is slightly below the state average, and its dropout rate has increased from 2.6% in 2018-2019 to 5.3% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average.

Compared to nearby high schools, such as Sandwich Middle High School, Mashpee Middle-High School, and Sturgis Charter Public School, Barnstable High's academic performance is generally lower, with these schools having higher MCAS proficiency rates and better statewide rankings. However, Barnstable High outperforms some nearby schools, such as Upper Cape Cod Vocational Technical and Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High, in terms of academic achievement and school rankings.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
