South Shore Charter Public School

Summary:

South Shore Charter Public School is an alternative public charter school serving grades K-12 in Norwell, MA, with a diverse student population of over 800 students. The school has consistently maintained high graduation rates and relatively low dropout rates in recent years.

South Shore Charter Public School stands out for its strong academic performance, particularly in English Language Arts. In 2023-2024, the school had 62.96% of 10th graders proficient or better in ELA, outperforming the state average of 56.86%. The school also had higher proficiency rates than the state in 3rd, 6th, and 7th grade ELA, as well as 3rd and 6th grade Math. However, the school's higher spending per student of $18,722 in 2020-2021 (compared to the state average) does not necessarily translate to the highest academic outcomes when compared to some nearby charter schools, such as Brooke Charter School, which outperforms South Shore Charter Public School on many MCAS proficiency metrics despite spending less per student.

Interestingly, South Shore Charter Public School has a more racially diverse student population compared to many of the nearby schools, which tend to have higher concentrations of specific racial/ethnic groups. For example, Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has 48.57% Hispanic students, while Brooke Charter School has 51.37% African American students. The virtual schools in the area, such as TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School and Brockton Virtual Learning Academy, generally have lower academic proficiency rates and higher dropout rates compared to South Shore Charter Public School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Parents Beware!! check the scores of your home school prior to enrolling your child. Our neighborhood school had a much better rating compared to SSCharter School. as they say Buyer Beware. I went by word of mouth. My friends sent their children here so I did too. turns out that the PUBLIC schools in our neighborhood are superior to SSCHARTER. I could have saved 30 minutes per day (commute to Norwell) had my children attended the school down the street. Our children now go to the neighborhood school. They are much happier. They now have friends from OUR neighborhood! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
