Northwood High School

Summary:

Northwood High School is an alternative public school located in Lena, Louisiana, serving grades PK-12 with a total enrollment of 613 students. As part of the Rapides Parish school district, which is ranked 42 out of 122 districts in Louisiana, Northwood High School stands out for its strong academic performance, diverse student population, and focus on supporting economically disadvantaged students.

Despite having a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (75.2%) compared to nearby schools like Oak Hill High School (66.27%) and Rapides Training Academy (67.95%), Northwood High School consistently outperforms the Rapides Parish and Louisiana state averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts. For example, in 2023-2024, Northwood's 8th-grade Mathematics proficiency rate was 80%, compared to 58% for Rapides Parish and 48% for Louisiana.

Northwood High School's diverse student population, with 55.3% White, 35.73% African American, and 9.97% other races, is another notable feature. This racial diversity does not appear to negatively impact the school's academic performance, as it outperforms the less diverse Oak Hill High School, which is 91.3% White. Additionally, Northwood's lower student-teacher ratio of 13.7 in 2022-2023, compared to 15.7 at Oak Hill High School and 27.5 at Rapides Training Academy, may be a contributing factor to its academic success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Northwood High recently received a technology grant that has allowed all of the High School students to receive their own laptop computer to use at school. Northwood has more technology available than any other school in the parish. The teachers and staff are wonderful. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
