Harold Keller Elementary School

Summary:

Harold Keller Elementary School is a public elementary school in Metairie, Louisiana, serving 662 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Jefferson Parish school district.

While the school has a diverse student population, with a majority Hispanic enrollment, its academic performance has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Louisiana elementary schools in recent years. Harold Keller Elementary lags behind the district and state averages on LEAP tests, particularly in English Language Arts and Social Studies, though its math performance is closer to the averages. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with its Hispanic and English Language Learner students performing better than the school's overall averages, while its African American, White, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students struggle significantly.

Compared to nearby schools like Walter Schneckenburger Elementary School and Airline Park Academy for Advanced Studies, Harold Keller Elementary consistently underperforms on academic measures. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and diverse population may contribute to these challenges, and addressing the unique needs of its underperforming subgroups will be crucial for improving overall academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I attended Harold Keller Elementary School from my Kindergarten through 5th Grade year. I was head of my class every year, culminating in being named Student Of The Year for the 2005-2006 school year. While attending, I made close connections with all my teachers, who instilled in me a knowledge that is invaluable. I learned not only how to read, add, multiply, and divide, but also how to operate in society. The school's administration and staff was top notch during my time as a student, and I'm sure it still is. This is a great school for any child. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
