The Academy @ Shawnee

Summary:

The Academy @ Shawnee is a public magnet high school serving grades 6-12 in Louisville, Kentucky, with 532 students. It is part of the Jefferson County school district, which is ranked 141 out of 159 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, The Academy @ Shawnee has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Kentucky high schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The data reveals a stark contrast in academic performance between The Academy @ Shawnee and the nearby magnet high schools, such as duPont Manual High, Louisville Male High, and Central High Magnet Career Academy. These schools consistently rank in the top quarter of Kentucky high schools and significantly outperform The Academy @ Shawnee across a range of metrics, including ACT and Kentucky State Assessment (KSA) proficiency rates, graduation rates, and student subgroup performance. Despite spending significantly more per student than nearby magnet schools, The Academy @ Shawnee is unable to translate this higher spending into improved academic outcomes.

The Academy @ Shawnee faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students. The school's persistent underperformance, struggles in serving diverse student populations, and high spending with poor outcomes suggest the need for a comprehensive review and implementation of evidence-based strategies to improve student learning and achievement. With a low student-teacher ratio, the school may have an opportunity to leverage this resource to provide more personalized and targeted instruction, but the data indicates the school has not been able to capitalize on this advantage to drive better academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child attends the Academy@ Shawnee Middle School. It is an EXCELLENT middle school, as the class sizes are small, the administration is supportive, present, and interactive, and the teaching staff is amazing. Sending my child to the Academy@Shawnee Middle School was the best decision we could have ever made!! Close Quote

Open Quote Although Shawnee isn't in the nicest area of town, the staff do the best they can with the lack of resources that the school receives from the district. Most of the students come from a poverty stricken area ( Portland) but students still seem to have plenty of school spirit. Shawnee is on the rise to be a better school! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
