South Heights Elementary School

Summary:

South Heights Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Henderson, Kentucky, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 420 students. The school is part of the Henderson County School District, which is ranked 33 out of 159 districts in Kentucky and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, South Heights Elementary has struggled in recent years, ranking in the bottom half of Kentucky elementary schools. The school has significantly lower proficiency rates in core subjects like Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Social Studies compared to the Henderson County and Kentucky state averages. For example, in 5th grade Mathematics, the school's proficiency rate was 40%, compared to 53% for the county and 41% for the state. However, the school has shown some strengths in the performance of specific student subgroups, such as African American students and students with disabilities.

Interestingly, South Heights Elementary is surrounded by several other elementary schools within the Henderson County School District that generally outperform it in academic measures, with higher proficiency rates and higher overall rankings from SchoolDigger. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 74.05%, which is significantly higher than the state average of 59.1%. This suggests that the school serves a population with a high level of economic disadvantage, which may be a contributing factor to its academic struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I recently spend a day at South Heights Elementary School. I have never seen more devotion and love for the students! From the principal, Mr. Carroll, to the folk in the lunch room, these people REALLY CARE for the students. I was most impressed by the PASS program. In this program trouble with any student is immediately addressed and a remedy is sought. The PASS administrator, Mr. Anthony Melvin, is obviously called to the position. He is warm and understanding, while being patient and kind to the students. He does have the answer to each child's needs. Every 15 minutes, all day long, troubled students are checked in the classroom by Mr. Melvin and his assistant. The principal, Mr. Rob Carroll, is absolutely the best! If you are fortunate enough to have a child at South Heights Elementary, you don't have to worry about your child; he is in good hands with these folk! It is no wonder to me that South Heights Elementary School is a National Model School again!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
