Deer Park Elementary School

Summary:

Deer Park Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Owensboro, Kentucky, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 480 students. The school is part of the Daviess County School District, which is ranked 61 out of 159 districts in Kentucky and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Deer Park Elementary consistently performs above the state and district averages in various subject areas, particularly in reading and writing. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 72% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in reading, compared to the state average of 46% and the district average of 52%. The school's performance in mathematics is more mixed, with some grades performing above the state and district averages, while others are below. Deer Park Elementary also outperforms many nearby schools, such as Meadow Lands, Southern Oaks, and Highland, in academic proficiency rates across various subjects and grade levels.

However, the school faces challenges in supporting its low-socioeconomic status (SES) and Asian student subgroups, which may require additional targeted interventions and resources. Deer Park Elementary has a relatively high percentage of students from low-SES backgrounds, with around 57% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in recent years. Despite these challenges, the school is well-resourced, with a higher-than-average per-student spending and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, which may contribute to its overall academic success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child was a transfer student at Deer Park. The entire time she was there, the staff would find every little issue that they could to threaten her enrollment as a transfer student and threatened to kick her out. Unfortunately, her behaviors are the result of bipolar disorder. The school did nothing to help us with this, did not offer an IEP or 504 plan. Instead, they made good on their threat and kicked her out, saying her behavior was an issue. Last time I checked, bipolar disorder is recognized as a disability by AMA and everyone else, so essentially, they kicked her because of her disability. At her new school, Southern Oaks, the staff have been wonderful and have accepted Carmela, as well as helping us with the resources needed for a child with bipolar. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
