Countryside Elementary

Summary:

Countryside Elementary is a public elementary school in Olathe, Kansas, serving 316 students in grades PK-5. It is part of the Olathe School District, which is ranked 55 out of 266 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Countryside Elementary has some bright spots, such as strong performance for African American and Hispanic students, the school overall struggles academically. Its proficiency rates on state assessments lag behind the Olathe district and Kansas state averages across all grades and subjects, particularly in 5th grade where the school performs well below the district. Countryside also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 50% to 55.38% over the past few years, which is higher than nearby schools like Walnut Grove Elementary (34.54%) and Briarwood Elementary (28.13%).

Compared to other schools in the Olathe district, Countryside Elementary's performance is generally lower, with nearby schools like Tomahawk Elementary and Walnut Grove Elementary outperforming it on state assessments and overall rankings. However, Countryside does outperform some lower-performing schools in the district, such as Ridgeview Elementary and Indian Creek Elementary. Addressing the school's academic challenges could be key to improving outcomes for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As we count down the final days of school for 2020--during a semester like no other we have ever experienced--I am in awe of the generosity and care our community has shown. Experiencing the energy and thoughtfulness that the Countryside Elementary staff--the teachers(Special shout out to Mrs. Vandusen - kindergarten and Mrs. Wohlford - 3rd grade), the JCPRD staff and directors, teachers assistants, custodians, office staff, food service team, and administrators--has put into ensuring the well-being of our children has been truly remarkable. This year, more than any other, they have included us (the families of our students) in that support. And what parents, as a school community, have been able to accomplish by communicating, collaborating, and pooling our individual efforts into collective success is inspiring. It is a palpable reminder of the goodness, resourcefulness, and humanity that is immanent in our community.

The incredible manifestation of this effort is shared by the entire community. My husband Mark and myself have Countryside Pride as we all do. Saying thank you just doesn't seem like enough. We appreciate you beyond words or recognition. You have all been amazing! Here's to the future of Countryside Elementary where the bar has been set so high that we trailblaze into 2021. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
