John Fiske Elementary

Summary:

John Fiske Elementary is a public elementary school in Kansas City, Kansas, serving 1,908 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Kansas City school district, which is ranked 257 out of 266 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

John Fiske Elementary has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Kansas, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade. The school's academic performance lags significantly behind the state and district averages, with only 10.06% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 9.71% in Mathematics. The school struggles to serve its diverse student population, with particularly low rankings for Hispanic, White, English Language Learner, and Special Education students. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 63.73% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

While nearby schools in the Kansas City district, such as Silver City Elementary, New Stanley Elementary, and Noble Prentis Elementary, also struggle with low academic performance, some schools like Whittier Elementary and Emerson Elementary have managed to outperform John Fiske Elementary. This suggests that there may be opportunities for improvement within the district, but the consistent low performance of John Fiske Elementary over the past decade indicates the need for a comprehensive, long-term approach to address the systemic challenges facing the school and its community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter goes to this school for K. So far okay, lunch menu is fair, same thing 5 lunches in a one school week and changed every 4 weeks, then repeat week 1, 2, 3, and 4. I think her teacher, Stokes, gets over whelmed at times with all the children, my daughter I feel needs more attention than she is receiving. I figured I would try this school, since it is a few blocks from home before sending her to a private school, may send her there for their curriculum and smaller classes. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
