Junction City Middle School

Summary:

Junction City Middle School is a public middle school serving 938 students in grades 6-8 in Junction City, Kansas, which is part of the Geary County Schools district. While the district is ranked 105 out of 266 in the state, Junction City Middle School has consistently underperformed compared to state and district averages in standardized test scores for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science.

Despite its overall academic challenges, Junction City Middle School appears to be doing a relatively good job in supporting certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander students. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's African American students were ranked 17th out of 73 Kansas middle schools, with a 4-star rating. However, the school's high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 59.71% to 61.09%, suggests a high proportion of students from low-income families, which may contribute to the academic challenges the school faces.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Abilene Middle School and Susan B. Anthony Middle School, Junction City Middle School consistently underperforms in academic measures. For example, in 2023-2024, Fort Riley Middle School, which is also part of the Geary County Schools district, had 37.76% of students proficient or better in ELA, compared to Junction City Middle School's 23.22%. This suggests a need for improvement in the school's academic programs and support systems.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote If I could give this school a 0 I absolutely would. I wish I would have looked at ratings and comments before sending her to this school. We are moving because the education is Kansas is absolutely terrible. They don't concentrate on actual learning subjects, they concentrate on bullying. I know bullying is a huge problem, but so is lack of education. Instead of talking to the kids that are actually doing the bullying they are putting ideas in kids heads. This is education system is worse then Florida's and that's bad. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
