Terre Haute South Vigo High School has a more racially diverse student population than the surrounding schools, with 73.17% White, 7.52% African American, 5.59% Hispanic, and 3.85% Asian students. Despite this diversity, the school's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores and Terre Haute North Vigo High School, is generally on par with or slightly better than the Vigo County School Corporation average. The school has also maintained a four-year graduation rate around 80%, which is slightly higher than the nearby West Vigo High School and Terre Haute North Vigo High School.

However, Terre Haute South Vigo High School faces a significant challenge with high chronic absenteeism rates, with 30.1% of students chronically absent in the 2022-2023 school year. This is notably higher than the nearby schools. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, at 51.3%, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Addressing the underlying causes of chronic absenteeism and supporting the needs of the school's economically disadvantaged student population will be crucial in further improving student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Special needs class needs revamped. My student has gone backwards in learning skills. When you have problems with aides, the school personnel sweeps the problems under carpet per say. If you are fully involved with your child’s education, and don’t use the school as a day care, you will be bumping heads with personnel, lied too, and everything you can think of. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
