Flint Lake Elementary School

Summary:

Flint Lake Elementary School is a public elementary school in Valparaiso, Indiana, serving 474 students in grades K-5. As part of the Valparaiso Community Schools district, which is ranked 14th out of 381 districts in Indiana, Flint Lake has a diverse student population and some unique characteristics compared to nearby schools.

Flint Lake has a more racially diverse student body, with 68.57% White, 8.86% African American, 14.35% Hispanic, and 6.12% two or more races. However, the school also has a higher chronic absenteeism rate of 13.4%, compared to lower rates at nearby schools like Heavilin Elementary (7.7%) and Central Elementary (15.3%). Additionally, Flint Lake has a relatively high percentage of students (43.04%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which may be a contributing factor to its academic performance.

While Flint Lake's test scores are generally above the state average, the school tends to lag behind the district-wide scores in Valparaiso Community Schools, particularly in English Language Arts and Social Studies. This fluctuating performance has led to the school's ranking ranging from 202nd out of 1,027 Indiana elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 571st out of 1,046 in 2015-2016, before improving in recent years. Addressing the school's higher chronic absenteeism and supporting its more economically disadvantaged student population could be key to improving Flint Lake's academic outcomes.

Open Quote Flint lake elementary used to be good when we had Mrs. Swanson as a principal, but since the new principal Dr. McCall has replaced her last year (2011), the school is longer safe for the children nor good as used to be. Our youngest child's experience at Flint Lake's was very sad and disappointing. We found that the Principal is very difficult to get along with, insensitive and rude. You learn very quickly not to question or query for there is price to be paid, generally by your child. We've never experienced such disregard for safety of the children. We would never suggest a student go to this school until the current principal is removed. We have heard of so much bulling between elementary students due to lack of supervision of the staffs, and the principal seems to not care about it. Also the classes are far too large, the lack of individualized attention is very disappointing. This school is horrible and students suffer. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
