Madison Elementary School

Summary:

Madison Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Wakarusa, Indiana, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 120 students. The school is part of the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation, which is ranked 24th out of 381 school districts in Indiana and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Madison Elementary School has a significantly higher percentage of white students (90.83%) compared to the surrounding schools, its academic performance has been a concern. The school's proficiency rates in ILEARN English Language Arts and Math are generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in 4th and 5th grades. Additionally, the school has experienced a concerning spike in chronic absenteeism, with the rate increasing from 3.1% in 2021-2022 to 12.3% in 2022-2023. Despite having a higher per-student spending ($11,470 in 2021-2022) compared to the district and state averages, Madison Elementary School has been underperforming many of the nearby schools, such as Emmons Elementary School and Jimtown Elementary School, which are part of the Baugo Community Schools and School City of Mishawaka districts, respectively.

The school's administration and the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation should closely examine the factors contributing to these issues and develop targeted strategies to address them. With declining statewide rankings, inconsistent test score performance, and a recent spike in chronic absenteeism, Madison Elementary School faces significant challenges that require immediate attention to ensure the academic success and well-being of its students.

Open Quote Our teachers have put programs in place to help struggling students and send personal notes home. We have a huge pool of volunteer parents who assist teachers with specials, as well as a strong parent and community support. Our kids are offered free summer learning programs and learn how to support charities and volunteer their time. Madison has been a blue ribbon school the past few years. We love our school, teachers, and administration and are very proud! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
