Willard Shambaugh Elementary School

Summary:

Willard Shambaugh Elementary School is a public K-5 school in Fort Wayne, Indiana, serving around 320 students. While the school outperforms the Fort Wayne Community Schools district on academic metrics, it has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past few years.

Willard Shambaugh stands out for its higher percentage of white students (65.94%) compared to nearby schools, which tend to be more racially diverse. The school also has lower chronic absenteeism and a lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch than some neighboring schools like Mabel K Holland Elementary and Northcrest Elementary. However, schools like Fred H Croninger Elementary and Lincoln Elementary significantly outperform Willard Shambaugh on test scores and other metrics.

Despite spending more per student than the Fort Wayne Community Schools district average, Willard Shambaugh's academic performance has declined over time, dropping from a 3-star to a 2-star rating. This suggests that factors beyond just funding may be impacting the school's ability to provide a high-quality education for all its students, particularly given the racial disparities observed in the student population.

Open Quote Shambaugh is an amazing school full of wonderful teachers and staff. They really care about the students, and anyone who tells you any different doesn't have all the facts (or is refusing to look at all the facts). Shambaugh teachers care more than any other school my children or I have been to. Mrs. Rodgers is an amazing principal with a huge heart. Shambaugh students are held to high expectations in both academics and behavior. Send your child to Shambaugh, and expect to get the best education possible in Fort Wayne. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
