Summary:

Centerville-Abington Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades 3-6 in Centerville, Indiana, with a student population of 552 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school is part of the Centerville-Abington Community Schools district, which is ranked 90 out of 381 districts in Indiana and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Centerville-Abington Elementary consistently outperforms the state and district averages in ILEARN English Language Arts and Math assessments, with 43.33% of students proficient or better in ELA and 46.62% proficient or better in Math, compared to 41.53% and 42.49% for the district, respectively. The school also has a lower chronic absenteeism rate (around 10%) and a lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (around 45%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 13.3% to 46.4% for chronic absenteeism and 47.44% to 92.92% for free/reduced lunch rates.

While Centerville-Abington Elementary appears to be a high-performing school, it has experienced a decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, dropping from 108th out of 1,036 Indiana elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 403rd out of 1,010 in 2023-2024. This suggests that the school may be losing ground relative to other schools in the state, despite its strong academic performance. The school's high student-teacher ratio (around 18:1) may be a contributing factor to its success, but it could also be an area for improvement if the district is able to provide additional resources to reduce class sizes.

Open Quote None of the administrators or principals take responsibility for the quality or lack there of. They only look at your childs test scores to evaluate him/her. If you have a good test taker, its fine. If not, there are lots of problems. My child has a B average in class work, yet falls short on the standardized tests. Their only answer was to put her in "special" classes. The principal also informed me that I had "no choice" in my childs education. They were only informing me that a change would be happening. Last time I checked, I have many choices! This school is not one of them! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
