Longwood Elementary School

Summary:

Longwood Elementary School is a public elementary school in Naperville, Illinois, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Indian Prairie CUSD 204 district. While the district is highly ranked, Longwood Elementary has seen a significant decline in its statewide ranking and overall rating in recent years.

Longwood Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and state in academic proficiency, with only 19.4% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 16.9% in Mathematics. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism, reaching 35.4% in the 2022-2023 school year, much higher than the district's average of 12.4%. Student subgroup performance varies, with female students, Asian and African American students, English Language Learners, and students with Special Education needs all performing below their peers in the state.

Interestingly, Longwood Elementary's performance lags behind nearby schools within the same district, such as Nancy Young Elementary, Mary Lou Cowlishaw Elementary, and Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary, which consistently outperform Longwood in academic proficiency and have lower chronic absenteeism rates. Despite the school's challenges, Longwood Elementary spends a relatively high amount per student, suggesting that the issue may not be solely a lack of resources, but rather how those resources are being utilized to support student learning and address the specific needs of the school community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Longwood is such a special school nestled in an amazing little neighborhood. The teachers and staff are amazing. They truly care about the students and families in the community. My eldest son came from a very small Montessori environment "ahead of the norm" and found his footing quickly as he adjusted to the learning environment and classroom structure. They pull students out for differentiated learning opportunities so my son can continue to advance in reading and math (his strengths) as needed. We live in the immediate neighborhood and are starting to outgrow our house but I know that I want to stay until all my kids can go through Longwood - it is that excellent. Close Quote

Open Quote The staff and teachers are responsive and caring. My daughter has been enrolled since Kindergarten and the office staff has always treated her like family. The teachers are responsive to concerns and questions. The school is very diverse and I feel that my daughter is going to school similar to how diverse the US is - and because it is so diverse, everyone is accepted as themselves - there is no pressure to "look exactly like this" or wear designer clothes. If you want your child to get real life experience, have caring teachers and staff, and be able to be themselves - this is the school (and neighborhood!) for you! Close Quote

Open Quote Longwood may not have the impressive test scores of other Elementary schools, but it is a wonderful and diverse school with a dedicated staff and in our experience has just as much to offer its students as anywhere else. The new creation station in the library 'Maker's Space', after school yoga, and robotics clubs are just a few examples. We love Longwood, and are greatful to get to be a part of this community! Open Quote My daughter was a little intimidated when she started @ Longwood for Kindergarten. She didnt think she was going to be able to keep up with her classmates but as the yr went on she progress very well & also did well on her testing. We Love Ms. Theis & the other teachers in KT class. They worked very hard & are very pleasant as well as patient with the students. We are going to miss Ms. Theis @ Longwood but my daughter is going into 1st grade & cant wait to see all her teachers & friends. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is phenomenal! My son who is in Kindergarten went from not knowing all of his sounds to his letters, not being able to write all of his letters of the alphabet to being able to read and spell this school year. I am amazed at the progress he has made! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
