Springfield Southeast High School

Summary:

Springfield Southeast High School is a public high school serving 1,261 students in grades 9-12 in Springfield, Illinois. The school is part of the Springfield School District 186, which is ranked 675 out of 813 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite being part of the same district as higher-performing schools like Springfield High School and Lanphier High School, Springfield Southeast High School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Illinois high schools, with only 10.3% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in SAT Mathematics, compared to 15.2% for the district and 26.1% for the state. The school's four-year graduation rate has ranged from 59.5% to 69.6% over the past 5 years, significantly lower than the 83% rate at Springfield High School. Additionally, the school's chronic absenteeism rate has been as high as 67.9%, much higher than the 33.4% rate at Springfield High School.

Interestingly, Rochester High School, which is in a different district (Rochester CUSD 3A), outperforms Springfield Southeast High School across multiple metrics, including academic achievement, graduation rates, and chronic absenteeism. The performance of certain student subgroups, such as African American, Multi-racial, and Low Socioeconomic Status students, is particularly concerning at Springfield Southeast High School, with these groups ranking in the bottom 30-50% of Illinois high schools. Despite the school's lower academic performance, it appears to have a higher spending per student compared to the higher-performing Springfield High School, suggesting that the issue may not be solely related to funding, but rather the effective allocation and utilization of resources.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is a hidden gem in Springfield. The principal is an excellent leader and the teachers and staff passionate and committed. The atmosphere is calm and family like, with little peer pressure. Of note is that a large portion of students are special education as we have the specialty programs of the district, which skews the statistics. We have actually had students at Yale and Harvard in the past few years! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
