Washington Intermediate School

Summary:

Washington Intermediate School is a public middle school located in Pekin, Illinois, serving grades 4-6 with a total enrollment of 393 students. It is part of the Pekin PSD 108 school district.

While Washington Intermediate School outperforms the district average in English Language Arts (ELA), with 40.8% of students proficient or better, it underperforms in Mathematics and Science compared to both the district and state averages. The school's chronic absenteeism rates have fluctuated, reaching as high as 32.0% in 2020-2021, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages. Despite higher per-student spending at the school, these academic challenges suggest that factors beyond just funding, such as instructional practices and targeted interventions, may need to be addressed to improve student outcomes.

Interestingly, Washington Intermediate School's ELA performance is generally stronger than nearby Broadmoor Junior High School and Wilson Intermediate School, which are also part of the Pekin PSD 108 district. However, in Mathematics and Science, Washington Intermediate School underperforms these nearby schools, as well as Illini Bluffs Middle School, which is in a different district (Illini Bluffs CUSD 327).

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote In Pekin, this is the school for your children to go to in 4-6 grade for many reasons. All the staff treats you with respect, and very helpful to any needs your family may have. The staff takes pride in the students and school. The principle worked with special needs children for many years before coming to Washington, that shows very well with patience concerning the children and parents at Washington. The Assistant Principle is also very fair and to the book when it comes to problems that may arise and has good communication with the children and parents. He is very down to earth and is a excellent role model. The teachers at Washington are a big reason I rate this school so high. Most teachers are continuing their educations and have access to the newest ways to teach to keep up with the 21st Century world.

There are many activities at Washington from Chess Teams, to Choir and Science Clubs.

I will be sad when my youngest finishes here in a few years. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
