Sugar Creek Elementary School

Summary:

Sugar Creek Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Normal, Illinois, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 414. The school is part of the McLean County Unified School District 5, which is ranked 420 out of 813 school districts in Illinois and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Sugar Creek Elementary has a relatively high spending per student at $18,032, the school's performance is concerning. Its chronic absenteeism rates have significantly increased, rising from 5.9% in 2019-2020 to 30.4% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better in IAR/English Language Arts and IAR/Mathematics, is consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 37.1% of all students at Sugar Creek were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 42.2% for the district and 41.2% for the state. The school's performance on subgroup metrics is also concerning, with rankings for female, male, African American, and white students all in the bottom half of Illinois elementary schools, and the special education and disabled student subgroups performing particularly poorly.

When comparing Sugar Creek Elementary to other nearby schools in the same district, such as Glenn Elementary and Fairview Elementary, it becomes clear that Sugar Creek is underperforming. These schools have higher academic performance and lower chronic absenteeism rates than Sugar Creek. The high percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (57.25% in 2022-2023) at Sugar Creek Elementary may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance and higher chronic absenteeism rates, suggesting that the school may need to focus on addressing the needs of its economically disadvantaged student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I'm from Saudi Arabia and I studied at Sugar Creek school for one year 4th grade(1999-2000) and it was amazing and memorial year. The ESL class was beneficial and supportive. I attend the school and I don't no what is Yes and No (No English at all)! and I left it with a very high Spoken and written English. My handwriting until now is different and neat. Thank you all Sugar Creek staff especially Mrs. Sloan Couch my 4th grade teacher. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter goes to Sugar Creek and the Principal (Scott Peters) couldn't be more attentive. Not to mention an involved staff. This is a wonderful school! We are currently basing our new house purchase on being in the district so we don't have to leave. Really great. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
