Brentwood Elementary School

Summary:

Brentwood Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Des Plaines, Illinois, serving 429 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Community Consolidated School District 59, which is ranked 424 out of 813 school districts in Illinois and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Brentwood Elementary School has been consistently ranked in the middle range of Illinois elementary schools, with a current ranking of 984 out of 2,067 schools and a 3-star rating.

Brentwood Elementary School faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates, which have risen from 6.2% in 2020-2021 to 28.8% in 2022-2023, notably higher than the district and state averages. The school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better in the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) exams, is generally below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (30.1%) and Mathematics (28.2%) were lower than the district (36.8% and 29.6%) and state (41.2% and 28.4%) averages. Additionally, the school's performance on the IAR exams varies significantly across different student subgroups, with particularly low rankings for Asian (1 out of 5 stars) and Hispanic (1 out of 5 stars) students.

When compared to nearby schools within the same district, such as Forest View Elementary School and Devonshire School, Brentwood Elementary School generally underperforms, with higher chronic absenteeism rates and lower academic proficiency. Despite having higher spending per student ($20,305 in 2022-2023) and a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 12.7, these factors do not appear to have had a significant impact on the school's academic performance, which remains a concern for the school and the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The principal is extremely dedicated and involved. Teachers are excellent, really making a difference. They care about student's results. The school organizes numerous events such as: how to improve reading skills, how to help your child study, chat with school psychologist about what to expect from a first grader, how to handle stress of being a parent, etc. All that is intended to help parents, who want to help their kids reach their potential. I have friends whose kids do not get homework at all, or very often. At Brentwood homework is assigned everyday. Reading logs need to be completed everyday. They really emphasize the power of reading, ever over the summer. Kids are encouraged to read with numerous incentives. Behavior and character are also highlighted and fostered, even starting in preschool. Parents are requested to attend first day of school with children, and to be involved in their child's education. I wish they had a little more after school activities. Overall, I am very pleased with this school, and give thumbs up to the principal and staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
