Alcott Elementary School

Summary:

Alcott Elementary School is a high-performing public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois. With 601 students, Alcott consistently ranks as one of the top elementary schools in the state, boasting a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade.

Alcott Elementary School significantly outperforms the Chicago Public Schools District 299 and the state of Illinois in academic proficiency across all grade levels and subjects. In the 2023-2024 school year, 70.8% of Alcott students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to just 30.5% for the district and 41.2% for the state. In mathematics, 58.4% of Alcott students were proficient or better, compared to 18.3% for the district and 28.4% for the state. Alcott also ranks among the top schools in Illinois for various student subgroups, including female students, Hispanic students, and students with special needs.

Alcott Elementary School's consistent high performance, low chronic absenteeism rates, and higher per-student spending compared to the district average suggest that the school is providing a high-quality education that is not necessarily reflective of the broader district or state. While Alcott outperforms many nearby schools, a few others, such as Hawthorne Elementary Scholastic Academy and Burley Elementary School, also demonstrate strong academic performance and may provide valuable insights into effective educational practices.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love this school. The kids are so good to each other, you can see it on the playground. The communication is great, and so far we have been pleased with both our son's Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers. I look forward to watching how the curriculum becomes more challenging as we move to the upper grades, some of the grading seems a bit easy here. Overall though the teachers do a great job managing large classes (26) and giving kids individual assessments. A huge benefit of going to this school is that Alcott is partnered with JCC which offers an amazing after school program. Very supportive of working parents! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
